Let's kick off the blog with some sports, shall we? You know, I spend my whole day in front of a computer, and on slow days at work, I end up surfing the internet for baseball rumors. I have some favorite sites that are updated regularly with credible rumors (check out www.mlbtraderumors.com - its a great resource). As you all know, I'm a Yankee fan, so I plan on being predictably biased - learn to love it!
How do you feel about the coin the Yanks have thrown around this winter? Crazy! Good thing the "fundmentals of the economy are sound," huh? lol. Honestly though, I like that the Yanks are free to spend whatever they want - the MLB CBA results in the league representing a microcosme of a capitalist society (no politics today!)... Plus, it gives my team a distinct advantage, which is cool.
I think CC, AJ, and Tex were all smart moves that the club needed to make. But like any team, they still ahev some weeknesses I'd like to see addressed. To me, they still need a SP, and maybe a bullpen piece. Pettitte would be a perfect fit here, for several reasons, not the least of which is the need for only a one-year deal. Joba looks awesome, but look, he hasn't proven he could give you 180 innings, right? Hughes is, like, 22. How many pitchers are quality major leaguers at 22? Few. Let Pettitte sit it out for a couple more weeks, then go back to him w/ the same $10M, one year offer you had on the table before. If he balks, start a rumor that you are in negotiations for Ben Sheets, and then come back to Andy one more time w/ the same offer yet again... He'll take it, and we'll take home Wrold Series Trophy Number 27!
But the Sox just won't roll over and die, will they? Their off-season of "high-risk, high-reward" projects will work out for them, as everything under the Epstein Regime seems to. Smoltz will start in late May, and go something like 13-2, watch. Penny will pull 200 innings out of his ass, and Ortiz will be fine. Now I know how the Sox felt in, like, 1999...
